Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 Tbsp. chopped parsley
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 Tbsp. olive oil
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 4 crusty Italian sandwich rolls
- 12 slices provolone cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Directions
Preheat Oven
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
Prepare the Meatballs
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, and chopped parsley.
- Season generously with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.
- Mix until well combined and form the mixture into 12 evenly sized meatballs.
Cook the Meatballs
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the meatballs and cook until seared on all sides, about 4 minutes.
- Pour marinara sauce over the meatballs, stirring gently to coat them. Cover the skillet with a lid.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer until meatballs are fully cooked, approximately 8-10 minutes. The internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C).
Prepare the Bread Boats
- While the meatballs are simmering, prepare the sandwich rolls. Cut a long rectangle through the top of each roll, hollowing out the top to create a “boat” shape.
- Line the inside of each bread boat with three slices of provolone cheese.
- Place the bread boats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese has melted.
Assemble the Subs
- Remove the bread boats from the oven. Place four meatballs into each boat, aligning them in a row.
- Spoon additional marinara sauce over the meatballs, ensuring they are well-coated.
- Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top, followed by the shredded Parmesan cheese.
Bake and Broil
- Return the subs to the oven and bake for an additional 6-8 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- For a golden, crispy top, broil the subs for 1-2 minutes, keeping a close eye to prevent burning.
Serve
- Serve hot with extra marinara sauce on the side if desired. Enjoy the perfect combination of savory meatballs, rich marinara, and gooey cheese, all nestled in a warm, crusty roll.
