Ingredients
Scale
For the Patty Melts:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 6 slices rye bread
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 6 slices cheddar cheese
- 6 slices provolone cheese
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
For the Secret Sauce:
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 3 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp relish
Instructions
- Form the Patties
- Shape the ground beef into 3 large patties about the same size as the rye bread slices. Season both sides with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Cook the Patties
- In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the patties until browned and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Secret Sauce
- In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, sugar, and relish until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
- Prepare the Bread
- Wipe the skillet clean and reduce heat to medium. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread generously.
- Assemble the Patty Melts
- Place 3 slices of bread, buttered side down, in the skillet. Top each with 2 slices of provolone, a cooked beef patty, and 2 slices of cheddar.
- Add Sauce and Top
- Spread a thin layer of the secret sauce on the non-buttered side of the remaining bread slices, then place each one sauce side down on top of the patties.
- Toast and Melt
- Cook until the bottom side is golden brown and the cheese begins to melt, about 3 minutes. Carefully flip the patty melts and continue cooking until the other side is golden brown and all the cheese is melted.
- Serve
- Remove from the skillet and serve warm, with extra secret sauce on the side for dipping if desired.
