Cheesy Patty Melts with Secret Sauce – A Classic Comfort Meal

For the Patty Melts:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 6 slices rye bread
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

For the Secret Sauce:

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp relish

Instructions

 

  1. Form the Patties
    • Shape the ground beef into 3 large patties about the same size as the rye bread slices. Season both sides with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook the Patties
    • In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the patties until browned and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Secret Sauce
    • In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, sugar, and relish until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  4. Prepare the Bread
    • Wipe the skillet clean and reduce heat to medium. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread generously.
  5. Assemble the Patty Melts
    • Place 3 slices of bread, buttered side down, in the skillet. Top each with 2 slices of provolone, a cooked beef patty, and 2 slices of cheddar.
  6. Add Sauce and Top
    • Spread a thin layer of the secret sauce on the non-buttered side of the remaining bread slices, then place each one sauce side down on top of the patties.
  7. Toast and Melt
    • Cook until the bottom side is golden brown and the cheese begins to melt, about 3 minutes. Carefully flip the patty melts and continue cooking until the other side is golden brown and all the cheese is melted.
  8. Serve
    • Remove from the skillet and serve warm, with extra secret sauce on the side for dipping if desired.
